Amalgamated Sugar Produces Cloth Masks

The CDC recommends wearing cloth face masks in public settings to prevent the spread of COVID-19.  Amalgamated Sugar has taken various measures to procure and/or produce masks in order to keep our employees safe.

“We have 16,000 masks on order with various suppliers, two of which are local,” said Scott Winn, Amalgamated Sugar’s Vice President of Operations. “Amalgamated Sugar was the first non-medical industry to put in orders with these local suppliers.”

At Amalgamated Sugar’s Beet Sugar Quality Lab, four industrial sewing machines that are typically used to sew tare sample bags will be used to sew masks. “We anticipate producing at least 2,000 masks,” said Winn. “We will donate any surplus we have once our critical infrastructure employees are adequately protected.”

Other Amalgamated Sugar employees are assisting in this effort as well, working to sew masks while at home.

There are many patterns for cloth masks available online at no cost. Amalgamated Sugar has adapted a pattern like the one found here.
